Hurricane Ivan uncovered it in 2004. The fish found it first, then the fishermen, then a dive shop owner who went down and kept what he saw to himself for years. When scientists finally sent the wood for radiocarbon dating, it came back too old to measure. A tree-ring study published in 2025 then showed that most of these trees died together, most likely early in the same spring.
