Description

CERN has shut down the Large Hadron Collider until 2030. But one of the most intriguing problems left behind by the LHC may have almost nothing to do with the machine being offline. Before the beams stopped, measurements from LHCb supported by results from CMS — continued to show an unusual pattern in rare B meson decays. The discrepancy sits around the four-sigma level: too significant to simply ignore, but not strong enough to claim a discovery. The obvious solution seems simple: collect more collisions. But there is a problem. A major part of the uncertainty comes not from CERN's detectors, but from the Standard Model prediction itself — specifically from extremely difficult strong-force calculations involving charm quarks, sometimes described in particle physics as “charming penguins.” And no amount of additional LHC data can directly shrink that uncertainty. In this documentary, we explore what CERN actually left behind when the beams stopped, why LHCb and CMS are seeing something unusual, what a four-sigma anomaly really means, why lattice QCD calculations matter, what Belle II can contribute, and why physicists may need a theoretical breakthrough as much as they need a more powerful collider. The LHC may be silent, but the question it created is very much alive. -- DISCUSSIONS & SOCIAL MEDIA Commercial Purposes: [email protected] Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@insanecuriosity Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/user/insanecuriosity Instagram: https://instagram.com/insanecuriositythereal Twitter: https://twitter.com/insanecurio Facebook: https://facebook.com/InsaneCuriosity Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/insane-curiosity-46b928277/ Our Website: https://insanecuriosity.com/ -- Credits: Ron Miller, Mark A.
