Carving Hundreds of Fish Scales

Carving Hundreds of Fish Scales Look at the level of detail going into this massive wooden carp sculpture from Fujian, China. The craftsman uses a chisel and mallet to shape hundreds of overlapping scales, carefully removing thin layers of wood to give each one a raised edge. This technique is called relief carving, where material is removed to create depth. He also uses fine chisels to define the eyes and facial features, while a rotary tool helps refine the curved details. Once the carving is complete, a spray finish brings out the wood grain and gives the sculpture its glossy appearance. The design appears to represent the Chinese legend of the carp leaping over the Dragon Gate. According to the story, a carp that succeeds in crossing the gate transforms into a dragon, symbolizing perseverance and success. Considering the size and detail of this sculpture, how much would you be willing to pay for it? #woodcarving #woodworking #craftsmanship #woodsculpture #carvingart
