Scientists Found These Extinct Animals ALIVE in 2026

Scientists are still finding animals ALIVE in 2026 that were once feared extinct, considered lost, or had completely disappeared from the scientific record. These are the incredible stories of extinct animals found alive, lost species rediscovered, and animals thought extinct that somehow survived for years, decades, and even thousands of years without scientists knowing where they were. In this video, we’re counting down 10 unbelievable animals found alive in 2026, including species that scientists hadn’t properly documented in decades, creatures once feared to be extinct, and mysterious Lazarus species that seemingly disappeared before suddenly being rediscovered alive. We’ll look at the Frosted Flatwoods Salamander, Panama’s lost frogs, Hochstetter’s Frogs, Mekong Giant Salmon Carp, Blue-fronted Lorikeet, Blue-spotted Bamboo Shark, Florida Sack-bearer Moth, a lost South African green moth, Rusty Lark, and the Pygmy Long-fingered Possum. Some disappeared for decades. One went roughly 94 years without proper scientific documentation. Another had a scientific record separated by an unbelievable 6,000-year gap. From animals thought extinct being found alive in remote rainforests, to missing species hiding in mountains, rivers, backyards, and even right under scientists’ noses, these discoveries prove we may still have no idea what animals are surviving in the wild. These creatures are often connected to the idea of Lazarus species—animals that vanish from scientific records for so long that their rediscovery can feel like an extinct animal suddenly coming back to life.
