Description
Bilbo Baggins lied. I need that to land properly, because we're talking about the most respectable hobbit in the Shire — a hobbit who treats a missed second breakfast as a moral failing. That hobbit came home from the Lonely Mountain and told everybody a story about the Ring that wasn't true. And he kept telling it. He wrote it in his book. He never took it out. And here's what most people don't know: for fourteen years, that lie was the actual published text of The Hobbit. If you bought the book in 1937, you got Bilbo's version, because Bilbo's version was the only version. Tolkien hadn't invented the truth yet.
In this video we walk through one small dishonesty and the three things it proves. It proves the Ring is evil before anyone in the story knows it's the One Ring — before Gandalf, before the fire, before the letters in the fiery script. It proves Tolkien pulled off the single best retcon in the history of fantasy by turning his own continuity problem into a plot point instead of hiding it. And it proves something about Bilbo that the films only half-kept: that the hobbit who lied is also the first bearer in the Ring's entire history to hand it over of his own free will.
We look at both versions of "Riddles in the Dark" — the 1937 first edition, where Gollum is almost polite, proposes the game with the ring as a "present," and apologizes when he can't produce it (even offers to catch Bilbo some fish), versus the 1951 rewrite where he loses the game, goes to fetch the ring so he can use it on Bilbo, and comes screaming after him. We look at the Prologue to The Lord of the Rings, where Tolkien does something almost unheard of and tells you the 1937 version was Bilbo's lie — that Bilbo wrote it in his memoirs, never altered it himself, and the true account only got into the Red Book because Frodo or Sam added it as an alternative. The first edition is canon. It's just canon as a fib.
Plus the publishing accident behind it (Letter 128 — Tolkien sent Allen & Unwin a "specimen" rewrite of Chapter Five for their amusement, heard nothing back, and three years later the proofs landed with the new chapter already typeset), Gandalf's chilling line about why the lie mattered ("The lies were too much alike for my comfort" — because Gollum had been calling the Ring his "birthday-present" for nearly five hundred years, and within days of finding it Bilbo was telling people it was a present too), and how Peter Jackson swapped the lie for "my courage" in the Hobbit trilogy because his audience had already watched the truth. What the film cost is the parallel: film-Bilbo never says "present," so you never hear him rhyme with Gollum. The lie stops being evidence and becomes character colour.
Bilbo took so little hurt from the evil, Gandalf says, because he began his ownership of the Ring "with Pity." Pity at the start, honesty at the end, and a lie in between that he never quite managed to scrub out of his own memoir. That's not a corrupted hobbit. That's a good hobbit with a bend in him.

ARTWORK & ARTIST CREDITS
This channel is built on the work of incredibly talented Middle-earth artists, and I want every one of them credited. Tracking down the original creator of a piece is often genuinely hard — art gets reposted, renamed, and separated from its source all across the internet. If your work appears in this video and you'd like a credit added, corrected, or your piece removed, just email me and I'll take care of it right away. Your wishes always come first.
