Description
Why do most airliners avoid the Tibetan Plateau? Not because of a ban: no airspace restriction applies; carriers pick other corridors for safety and practicality. The plateau, uplifted by the Indian Plate's collision with Eurasia, averages ≈ 4500 m. After cabin-pressure loss, jets normally descend to 10000 ft (3000 m), but here the ground is higher than that target, and the minimum safe altitude tops 20000 ft across big stretches. Passenger oxygen comes from chemical generators that run roughly 12–20 minutes, far short of the hours needed to cross. Add engine-out drift-down, few high-altitude alternate airports, winter jet-stream splitting and mountain-wave turbulence. Yet flights do serve Lhasa and Daocheng Yading (4411 m), the highest civil airport on Earth, where thin air cuts thrust and lift and stretches the ground roll, so runways reach 4000–5000 m. Technical Disclaimer: Educational 3D reconstruction. The Tibetan Plateau is not a regulatory no-fly zone, and some flights (e.g., Lhasa services) operate there; this Short explains why most transit routes avoid it. Figures are approximate ISA/typical values, not flight-safety or operational guidance. Visuals are AI-generated illustrations, and the human figures are symbolic.
