Description
You have been in a house like this. Three dogs, maybe a cat as well, animals that have clearly lived there for years — and the house does not smell like dogs. Not in the entryway, not on the furniture, not anywhere.
And you have one dog. One. And when you come home from a week away and open your own front door, you smell it in that half second before your nose gives up.
So you bought the candles, the plug-ins, the spray under the sink. And none of it has ever fixed anything, because none of it was aimed at the problem.
Here is the part nobody tells you: smell does not float in the air. It lives in a material, and then releases slowly — which is why the room smells again an hour after you sprayed it. So the question was never what to spray. The question is what in your house is holding it.
In most American homes the answer is under your feet. Carpet is not one layer — it is carpet over a half inch of open foam pad, and that pad is a sponge. In most Mexican homes there is no carpet at all. An American house has a sponge on the floor. A Mexican house has a plate. You can wipe a plate.
This video is the three structural reasons those houses don't smell, and then the version that works in an American house — because nobody is ripping out their carpet.
What's covered:
• Why smell lives in materials, not in the air
• Carpet and the foam pad underneath it — the reservoir you can't reach
• Why the floor gets washed daily instead of monthly, and why that's the same amount of work
• The jerga method, and why a string mop spreads dirty water around
• Why dog smell is skin oil pressed into upholstery, not dirt
• How brushing a dog outdoors changes a whole house
• Opening the house for 15 minutes a morning, in winter too
• Bedding and cushions in the sun
• Pinol and Fabuloso — and a serious warning if you own a cat
• Why the pine is NOT the reason the house is clean
• The American version of all of it, costing nothing
IMPORTANT — IF YOU HAVE A CAT: pine oil and the phenols in some floor cleaners are genuinely dangerous to cats. Their livers cannot break those compounds down, and they walk on the floor and then lick their paws. In a house with a cat, use plain hot water with a little dish soap, and vinegar for the smell. Details in the video.
Your one job this week: only the entry. Just the floor by your front door, washed properly with a cloth every morning for one week. Then come tell me in the comments whether anyone NOTICED — not whether you noticed, because you live there and your nose has quit. Whether somebody who walked in said something.
