Description
There's a spot on your carpet and you know exactly where it is. You've cleaned it more than once. It
came up, the room smelled fine for a week — and then one warm afternoon in July it was back, like
you'd never touched it.
Here's why, and it isn't because you didn't scrub hard enough.
That stain is not in your carpet. Carpet is a quarter inch thick and liquid goes through it in seconds. The
accident is in the pad underneath — a half inch of open foam that works like a sponge — and it spread
out sideways down there in a circle two or three times wider than anything you can see on top
And the reason it returns every summer is one thing water cannot touch: uric acid. It forms crystals that
don't dissolve, and those crystals pull moisture out of the air. Humidity rises, and they turn back into wet
urine. That's why it's worse after you shampoo the carpet, and why you've wondered more than once
whether you were imagining it.
What's covered:
- Why the spot you can see is the smallest part of the problem
- Uric acid, and why every cleaner you've used washed around it
- The $12 blacklight that shows you every spot in the room
- Why you must NEVER steam clean a pet stain
- Why ammonia cleaners make a dog come back to the same place
- What an enzyme cleaner actually is and how to use it properly
- The covering step almost everybody skips
- The honest truth about the peroxide and baking soda mix
- Why your pet keeps returning to that exact spot
- When the pad has to come out — and why it's cheap
- What a carpet cleaning company may do that makes it permanent
Your one job this week: don't clean anything. Buy the blacklight, turn the lights off, and go over that
room. Then tell me in the comments two numbers — how many spots you found, and how many you
already knew about.
