Description

No DNA study has tested Haitians of Syrian or Lebanese descent, and there is no verified list of Syrian-Haitian surnames — but there is a documented history of Levantine migration to Haiti, and two serious genetic studies of the Levant itself. This video puts them side by side and shows what DNA can and cannot tell a family like yours. In this video we walk through the real history and the real research: 📌 Who the people called "Syrians" in Haiti really were: Syrian, Lebanese and (later) Palestinian migrants, many of them peddlers who became merchants — and why the label was imprecise 📌 The contemporary estimates (15,000 to 20,000 in 1903, "nearly fifteen thousand", 15,000 in a 1904 article) and why they are not a census 📌 The Haitian law of August 10 (cited as 1903 and 1905 in the same letter) aimed at "every person styled Syrian, or so called in popular language" 📌 "Haiti for Haitians", the "péril syrien", a reported 1904 riot, and social exclusion from elite clubs — then citizenship, French and Creole, and intermarriage 📌 The 2013 PLoS Genetics study (1,341 new Levantine samples, 500,000+ markers): recent genetic structure in the Levant follows religious affiliation 📌 The 2017 AJHG study: five ~3,700-year-old Canaanite genomes from Sidon and 99 present-day Lebanese genomes — most Lebanese ancestry comes from a Canaanite-related population, plus Eurasian ancestry arriving about 3,750–2,170 years ago 📌 Why consumer DNA tests can mislead for a small Levantine slice of ancestry — and the three questions to ask your family tonight Every claim in this video is drawn from published research and documented history. Where we could not verify something, we say so. 🔎 Want to see what the records say about your surname?
