Description

Two waves of Haitians crossed to Cuba, one during the Haitian Revolution and one a century later to cut sugar cane. Today a published genetic study links recent African ancestry in eastern Cuba to migration from Haiti. So are Haitians and Haitian-Cubans really different? This video separates what the records show from what nobody has measured. In this video we walk through: 📌 The 1803 refugees who reached Santiago de Cuba, and who Cuba let stay 📌 The tumba francesa societies that still carry Saint-Domingue's French patois 📌 The twentieth-century sugar workers: about 200,000 Haitians, the 1913 contract rule and the deportations of the 1930s 📌 What two Cuban genetic studies say about African ancestry in the east of the island 📌 Why a national DNA average can never describe one family 📌 Which records a Haitian-Cuban family can actually search Important note, stated directly in the video: we found no DNA study of Haitian-Cubans as a group and no comparison between them and people in Haiti, so the title cannot be answered with a percentage. Historical counts differ between sources (for example, the deportation figures), and we say so in the script. 🔎 Want to find out if a branch of your family crossed to Cuba? Book your surname search.
