Description
No published study shows that millions of white Americans carry Haitian DNA. But a large genetic study did find African ancestry in a share of white Americans, and a well-documented wave of Saint-Domingue refugees did reach the United States. This video lays both out, tests whether one explains the other, and shows exactly where the evidence stops.
In this video we walk through the real research and the real history:
📌 The 2014 American Journal of Human Genetics study (23andMe): 5,269 African Americans, 8,663 Latinos and 148,789 European Americans — with about 3.5% of self-described European Americans carrying at least 1% African ancestry, concentrated in the South, usually from an ancestor within about seven generations
📌 Why the "six million" headline is a media number we could not trace to the paper
📌 The refugee wave: more than 25,000 people from Saint-Domingue arriving in the United States between 1791 and 1810 — over 16,000 of them Black, about 8,000 white — with 3,000+ in Philadelphia by 1794 and a reported 10,000 in New Orleans (dated 1809–1810 depending on source)
📌 How refugees were received: ships stranded south of New Orleans, South Carolina lifting its ban on foreign enslaved people in 1804, and the myth of refugees as agents of rebellion
📌 Why 25,000 people cannot by themselves explain "millions" — and what the dominant source of African ancestry in white Americans was
📌 Why "Haitian DNA" is not a separate category: Haitians average ~84% African ancestry (PLOS Genetics, 2013); Y-chromosome lineages 77.2% African / 20.3% European (123 men)
📌 What a study would need to prove the title's claim — and why we say "we do not yet know"
Every claim in this video is drawn from published research and documented history. Where we could not verify something, we say so — including that we found no study connecting white Americans' African ancestry to Haiti.
