Description
Ask three Haitians for their full names and you may hear Pierre Joseph, Jean Louis, Joseph Pierre — and it isn't always clear which word is the first name. Behind that ordinary habit is a documented story about how a population recorded as property came to carry family names, and what DNA can and cannot say about the ancestors behind them.
In this video we walk through the records, the numbers and the science:
📌 The pattern: Pierre, Jean and Joseph among the most frequent surnames in Haiti (Geneanet), and a researcher's count of ~25,000 official and graduate names (Joseph 940, Jean 578, Jean Baptiste 295, Jean Louis 177) — with the sample's limits explained
📌 The record: most names in the earliest civil registers are simply first names (Association de Généalogie d'Haïti), a convention inherited from slave inventories
📌 The documented routes to a surname: plantation, rank or role, former owner, or a mother's name — and the one conclusion we flag as inference: that many given names became family names
📌 Toussaint (Bréda, then Louverture) and Jean-Jacques Duclos / Dessalines: the same name-building mechanisms in action
📌 The DNA: ~84% African ancestry (PLOS Genetics, 2013) and a Y-chromosome study of 123 Haitian men — 77.2% African vs. 20.3% European paternal lineages — showing why a French-sounding surname is not a French bloodline
📌 Geggus's published figures: about 24% Kongo; Fongbe speakers 5.9% of the colony (16.3% of Africans on northern sugar estates)
📌 Three questions to ask of your own surname tonight
Every claim in this video is drawn from published research and documented history. Where we could not verify something, we say so — including that we found no counted, official ranking of Haitian surnames.
🔎 Want to know which generation first carried your surname, and what the records show beside it? Our surname and record research service goes directly into the surviving colonial, church and civil records tied to your name. Link pinned in the comments.
💬 Drop your surname and region of Haiti below — and tell us if it sounds like a first name. We read every comment.
