Description

Evolution of PRAGUE: Fixed-Camera Timelapse 12,000 Years in 13 Minutes Most European cities have a medieval center. Prague has twelve thousand years of everything and somehow managed to keep almost all of it. No major bombing in World War II. No Haussmann-style demolition. No concrete grid replacing the Gothic streets. Just layer after layer of civilization, stacked on top of each other along a bend in the Vltava River, still mostly intact and still completely extraordinary. 🎬 IN THIS VIDEO: ⬥ The Vltava valley is frozen tundra. No city. No river crossing. Just the last ice age retreating north and the land slowly coming back to life. ⬥ The first hunter-gatherer groups move through the valley around 8,000 BC. ⬥ Farming communities take root during the Neolithic period. ⬥ Celtic tribes of the La Tène culture establish themselves in Bohemia around 500 BC, turning the valley into a node in a wide Central European trade network. ⬥ Slavic communities settle the Vltava valley around 500 AD, gradually replacing the older populations and building the agricultural foundation that Prague will eventually grow from. ⬥ The Přemyslid dynasty fortifies the ridge above the river around 880 AD. Prague Castle begins as a wooden palisade on a hill - the seed of everything that follows. ⬥ The Judith Bridge - Prague's first stone river crossing - is built in 1172, physically connecting both banks for the first time and turning Prague into a proper crossroads city. ⬥ Old Town receives its walls in 1230. Malá Strana is formally founded in 1257. The city is assembling itself piece by piece on both sides of the Vltava. ⬥ Charles IV makes Prague the capital of the Holy Roman Empire in the mid-14th century. Charles Bridge begins construction in 1357. The New Town is founded. St. Vitus Cathedral rises above the castle. For a brief period, Prague is the most important city in Europe. ⬥ The Astronomical Clock - one of the oldest still functioning in the world - appears on the Old Town Hall in 1410. ⬥ Jan Hus is burned at the Council of Constance in 1415. The Hussite Wars tear through Bohemia. Prague becomes the center of a religious revolution that predates the Reformation by a century. ⬥ In 1618, Protestant nobles throw three Catholic officials out of a window of Prague Castle. The Defenestration of Prague triggers the Thirty Years' War - one of the most destructive conflicts in European history. ⬥ The Habsburgs win. The Protestant city becomes a Baroque Catholic showpiece. The skyline fills with domes and church towers built by the victors. ⬥ The railway arrives in 1845. Industrialization follows. Prague grows beyond its medieval walls for the first time in its history. ⬥ Czechoslovakia is declared an independent republic on the 28th of October 1918. Prague becomes the capital of a new country overnight. ⬥ Nazi occupation. Then liberation. Then Soviet-backed communism for four decades. In 1968, the Prague Spring briefly opens a window of reform before Soviet tanks close it again. ⬥ In November 1989, the Velvet Revolution ends 41 years of communist rule without a single shot fired. The crowds gather on Wenceslas Square. Within weeks, Václav Havel is president. ⬥ Czechoslovakia peacefully splits in 1993. Prague becomes the capital of the Czech Republic and almost immediately one of the most visited cities in Europe. ⬥ 2026. Charles Bridge is still standing. The castle is still on the hill. The Vltava still bends the same way it always has. 📍 THE LOCATION: Fixed camera position: The Vltava River valley, Prague, Czech Republic from the ridge above Charles Bridge looking toward Prague Castle. Cinematography: A single, unmoving wide-angle camera remains fixed in the exact same location for the entire 12,000 year journey, capturing the transformation of this Bohemian river valley from post-glacial wilderness to one of the most architecturally preserved cities on earth. 🔔 Like if history like this deserves to exist.
