Description

Evolution of HONG KONG: Victoria Harbour Fixed-Camera Timelapse 12,000 Years in 12 Minutes Victoria Harbour is one of the most photographed waterfronts on earth. But twelve thousand years ago, it didn't exist. This was a river valley. And in the space of a single human lifetime, one of the greatest port cities in history appeared from almost nothing. 🎬 IN THIS VIDEO: ⬥ Victoria Harbour doesn't exist yet. The ground between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon is a river valley. ⬥ The first humans settle on the shoreline around 4,000 BC - Neolithic fishing communities with dugout canoes, stone tools and simple shelters. ⬥ In 221 BC, the Qin dynasty unifies China and pushes south. ⬥ The Han dynasty takes over in 111 BC. ⬥ In 1127, the Southern Song dynasty retreats south under Mongol pressure. ⬥ In 1661, the Qing dynasty forcibly evacuates the entire coastline to starve out resistance fighters. ⬥ In 1841, British forces land on Hong Kong Island. ⬥ By 1842, the Treaty of Nanking formally cedes Hong Kong Island to Britain. ⬥ In 1860, the southern tip of Kowloon is ceded after a second war. For the first time, both sides of the harbor are under British control. ⬥ The Star Ferry begins crossing the harbor in 1888. It still crosses today. ⬥ The Kowloon–Canton Railway opens in 1910, connecting the harbor directly to mainland China. ⬥ On the 8th of December 1941, Japan attacks Hong Kong. ⬥ In 1945, Allied ships enter the harbor. The city begins rebuilding almost immediately and within a decade, the pace of construction is unlike anything the harbor has ever seen. ⬥ Waves of refugees arrive from mainland China in 1949 following the Communist victory. Hong Kong's population explodes. ⬥ The Cross-Harbour Tunnel opens in 1972. ⬥ In 1984, Britain and China sign the Joint Declaration. ⬥ On the 1st of July 1997, the last British governor leaves by sea. ⬥ Kai Tak Airport closes in 1998. ⬥ A Symphony of Lights launches in 2004. ⬥ 2026. The Star Ferry still crosses. The granite mountains are still there. The harbor took twelve thousand years to become this. 📍 THE LOCATION: Fixed camera position: Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong. Cinematography: A single, unmoving wide-angle camera remains fixed in the exact same location for the entire 12,000 year journey, capturing the transformation of this natural harbor from post-glacial river valley to one of the most recognized and densely developed waterfronts on earth. 🔔 Like if history like this deserves to exist.
