Description

Evolution of SOUTH DAKOTA: Fixed-Camera Timelapse 12,000 Years in 12 Minutes Mount Rushmore is one of the most recognized images in America. But almost nobody knows the full story of what this land was before four presidents were blasted into the granite. 🎬 IN THIS VIDEO: ⬥ The Black Hills are completely wild. ⬥ The Lakota people establish a deep, sustained presence in the Black Hills. ⬥ In 1776, the United States declares independence on the East Coast. The Black Hills are thousands of miles away and completely outside American reach. ⬥ The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 doubles the size of the United States on paper. The westward pressure begins in earnest. ⬥ The ideology of Manifest Destiny takes hold in the 1840s. ⬥ The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 formally recognizes the Black Hills as part of the Great Sioux Reservation. The United States government signs a legal agreement guaranteeing this land to the Lakota people. ⬥ In 1874, Lieutenant Colonel George Custer leads a military expedition into the Black Hills and reports the discovery of gold. ⬥ By 1877, the Black Hills have been seized. The sacred land is now a mining district. ⬥ In 1923, South Dakota state historian Doane Robinson proposes carving giant figures into the Black Hills to attract tourism. ⬥ In 1941, Gutzon Borglum dies before the project is fully complete. His son Lincoln closes down the work. The sculpture is declared finished as it stands. The planned Hall of Records carved into the mountain behind the faces is never built. ⬥ Mount Rushmore becomes a symbol of American national identity in the postwar era - appearing in films, on stamps, in advertising, embedded into the visual shorthand of what America means to itself. ⬥ In 1980, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that the Black Hills were taken illegally from the Lakota and awards $105 million in compensation. ⬥ In 2020, amid a broader national reckoning with monuments and history, Mount Rushmore becomes a flashpoint. Planned fireworks are held. Protests gather nearby. ⬥ 2026, four presidents look out from the granite. 📍 THE LOCATION: Fixed camera position: Mount Rushmore, Black Hills, South Dakota, USA - the Pahá Sápa of the Lakota people. Cinematography: A single, unmoving wide-angle camera remains fixed in the exact same location for the entire 12,000 year journey, capturing the transformation of this sacred granite mountain from untouched wilderness to one of America's most contested and most visited landmarks. 🔔 Like if history like this deserves to exist.
