Description

Evolution of LA HABANA, CUBA: Fixed-Camera Timelapse 12,000 Years in 12 Minutes Havana has one of the most dramatic harbors in the Western Hemisphere and for most of human history, almost nobody knew it existed. 🎬 IN THIS VIDEO: ⬥ Havana Harbor is untouched Caribbean coastline - mangroves, wildlife and warm shallow water. ⬥ The first humans arrive on the Cuban coast around 6,000 BC - fishing communities who use this harbor seasonally for thousands of years without building anything permanent. ⬥ The Taíno people establish a stable, sustained presence around the bay. ⬥ In 1492, Columbus reaches Cuba. The world that existed here for twelve thousand years begins to disappear within a generation. ⬥ Diego Velázquez begins the Spanish conquest of Cuba in 1511. ⬥ San Cristóbal de La Habana is officially founded at its current location in 1519. What starts as a small colonial outpost on a strategic harbor will eventually become one of the greatest cities in the Americas. ⬥ Pirates attack repeatedly through the mid-1500s. Construction of the Castillo de la Real Fuerza begins in 1558 - the first of what will become the most extensive fortification system in the Caribbean. ⬥ In 1561, Havana becomes the mandatory assembly point for the Spanish treasure fleet. The bay the Taíno once fished quietly is now the financial artery of an empire. ⬥ In 1762, Britain besieges Havana with 200 ships and 14,000 troops. The city falls after 44 days. Britain holds it for eleven months before trading it back to Spain in exchange for Florida. ⬥ Havana opens as a free port in 1818. ⬥ In 1863, the colonial walls are demolished. The city expands beyond its old boundaries for the first time in 300 years. ⬥ The Spanish-American War ends in 1898. Spain's colonial empire in the Americas is over. Cuba is independent, though American influence quickly replaces Spanish control. ⬥ The Cuban Republic is declared in 1902. The Malecón seawall is built. El Capitolio is completed in 1929. ⬥ Fidel Castro's revolution succeeds on the 1st of January 1959. The casinos close. The wealthy leave. ⬥ In 1982, UNESCO inscribes Old Havana and its fortification system as a World Heritage Site. ⬥ The Soviet Union collapses in 1991. ⬥ 2026. The harbor still looks roughly the way it did when the Spanish first sailed in. The fortresses still stand. The old cars still run. The camera hasn't moved. 📍 THE LOCATION: Fixed camera position: The entrance to Havana Harbor, La Habana, Cuba. Cinematography: A single, unmoving wide-angle camera remains fixed in the exact same location for the entire 12,000 year journey, capturing the transformation of this Caribbean bay from post-glacial wilderness to one of the most recognized and UNESCO-protected colonial cities on earth. 🔔 Like if history like this deserves to exist.
