Description
Evolution of GIZA, EGYPT | Fixed-Camera Timelapse: 5,000 Years From Desert to Wonder of the World
For most of human history, people have looked at these three structures and asked the same question: How? No one has ever fully answered it. What we do know is that the ground they stand on was empty desert five thousand years ago and that everything that happened between then and now is one of the strangest, most dramatic stories on earth.
🎬 IN THIS VIDEO:
⬥ The Giza Plateau is bare limestone and desert sand. Just the Nile valley green in the distance and a flat expanse of rock.
⬥ In 2589 BC, Pharaoh Khufu turns the plateau into the largest construction site in human history.
⬥ The Great Pyramid of Khufu is completed around 2566 BC.
⬥ By 2503 BC, all three pyramids stand complete.
⬥ As the Old Kingdom weakens after 2181 BC, the plateau empties. Desert sand begins reclaiming the Sphinx.
⬥ Around 1401 BC, Pharaoh Thutmose IV clears the sand from the Sphinx after reportedly dreaming the statue spoke to him.
⬥ Alexander the Great arrives in 332 BC.
⬥ After the Arab conquest of Egypt in 641 AD, stone from the pyramid casing begins to be systematically removed for construction in Cairo.
⬥ In 1196, a ruler attempts to physically demolish the Pyramid of Menkaure.
⬥ Napoleon arrives in 1798 with an army and a team of scientists. The Sphinx has no nose. It has been missing for centuries before his soldiers ever set foot in Egypt.
⬥ Between 1817 and 1853, the first systematic excavations begin around the Sphinx and Valley Temple.
⬥ Flinders Petrie arrives in 1880 and measures the Great Pyramid with a precision that shocks the academic world.
⬥ Between 1925 and 1936, Émile Baraize leads a massive excavation that finally frees the Great Sphinx from the sand entirely for the first time in modern history. The full body of the statue is revealed.
⬥ UNESCO inscribes Giza as a World Heritage Site in 1979.
⬥ In 1988, a large piece of masonry falls from the Sphinx's shoulder.
⬥ In 2016, physicists use cosmic-ray muon detectors to scan the interior of the Great Pyramid and discover a previously unknown large void inside the structure.
⬥ In 2021, Khufu's ancient solar boat discovered buried beside the pyramid in 1954.
⬥ 2026. The three pyramids still stand.
📍 THE LOCATION:
Fixed camera position: The Giza Plateau, Egypt.
Cinematography: A single, unmoving wide-angle camera remains fixed in the exact same location for the entire 5,000 year journey, capturing the transformation of this limestone plateau from empty desert to the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World.
