Description
Evolution of NEW YORK (12,000 Years in 11 Minutes) | Fixed-Camera Timelapse: Statue of Liberty
Most people know what Liberty Island looks like. Almost nobody knows what it used to be. For thousands of years it was a shellfish bed, then a seasonal fishing camp, then a quarantine station, then a military fort, then the most recognized piece of real estate on earth.
🎬 IN THIS VIDEO:
⬥ The harbor is a glacial valley.
⬥ Sea levels rise for thousands of years, slowly cutting this low piece of ground off from the surrounding land until a small tidal island takes shape in the middle of the estuary.
⬥ The Lenape people use the island for generations - oyster harvesting, fishing, seasonal camps.
⬥ On the 17th of April 1524, Giovanni da Verrazzano sails into New York Bay - one of the first Europeans documented to enter these waters.
⬥ Henry Hudson enters the harbor in 1609. The era of European colonization begins. The island starts to acquire names and owners.
⬥ In 1667, Isaac Bedloe takes possession of the island. It becomes known as Bedloe's Island.
⬥ The island serves as a quarantine station through repeated smallpox outbreaks in the 18th century.
⬥ In 1808, the U.S. Army takes full control and begins construction of a star-shaped fort. By 1811, Fort Wood - an eleven-pointed granite fortification - is complete. It is the base the Statue of Liberty will one day stand on.
⬥ Édouard de Laboulaye proposes the idea of a monument to liberty as a gift from France to the United States in 1865, at a dinner table, at the end of the Civil War.
⬥ Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi arrives to survey the harbor in 1871 and immediately recognizes Bedloe's Island as the right location.
⬥ Construction of the pedestal begins inside Fort Wood.
⬥ On the 17th of June 1885, the French ship Isère arrives in New York Harbor carrying 214 crates containing the disassembled Statue of Liberty.
⬥ On the 28th of October 1886, President Grover Cleveland inaugurates the statue before a harbor full of ships. It is copper-brown, not green.
⬥ On the night of the 30th of July 1916, a German sabotage operation detonates munitions at Black Tom Wharf in New Jersey, less than a mile away. The explosion damages the torch arm. The crown observation deck closes and never fully reopens to the public.
⬥ A major restoration closes the statue in 1984. When it reopens on the 5th of July 1986 - one day after America's 210th birthday - the torch is gold-plated for the first time.
⬥ On the 11th of September 2001, the camera watches smoke rise from Lower Manhattan. The Twin Towers disappear from the skyline behind the statue. Liberty Island closes immediately.
⬥ Hurricane Sandy floods 75% of the island in October 2012.
⬥ The Statue of Liberty Museum opens on the 16th of May 2019, giving the original torch a permanent home on the island for the first time.
⬥ 2026. The statue is 140 years old. One World Trade Center has replaced the Twin Towers on the skyline.
📍 THE LOCATION:
Fixed camera position: Liberty Island, New York Harbor, New York, USA.
Cinematography: A single, unmoving wide-angle camera remains fixed in the exact same location for the entire 12,000 year journey, capturing the transformation of this tidal island from post-glacial marshland to the most photographed monument in the world.
