Description

This October, three quiet rules are taking money from seniors — and the first one was sold as good news. "No tax on Social Security" was not what the law actually did, and many people who stopped their tax withholding will get a bill in April. Medicare's higher-income charge is based on what you earned two years ago, and the letters arrive in November and December. And from January 1, Medicaid will cover fewer months before you apply, which can mean a nursing home bill of nearly $10,000. Two of these you can still stop — here's how. 0:00 3 rules taking money this October 1:19 A quick favor 1:32 Change 1: Is Social Security really tax-free now? 4:21 Change 2: Why Medicare may charge you more next year (IRMAA) 7:33 Change 3: What changes January 1 (Medicaid & nursing homes) 10:29 How to stop them — what to do this month 11:08 Checklist (screenshot this) CHECKLIST ✅ Social Security is NOT tax-free. The law created a $6,000 senior deduction ($12,000 for couples, both 65+). ✅ Stopped your tax withholding? Send form W-4V to Social Security this month (7%, 10%, 12% or 22%). Ask a tax preparer about a payment by Jan 15. ✅ Filed an extension? Make sure the senior deduction is on your return by October 15. ✅ Medicare's extra charge (IRMAA) uses your income from two years ago. In 2026 it starts above $109,000 single / $218,000 married. ✅ Got an IRMAA letter? Check the tax year and the number. You have 60 days to ask for a review. ✅ Big life change (stopped working, lost a spouse, divorce, lost a pension)? Ask about form SSA-44. ✅ A loved one in a nursing home or going soon? Apply for Medicaid early — even with missing papers. ✅ Applications filed by December 31 keep the 3-month look-back. From January 1, 2027 it's 2 months. WHO TO CALL • Social Security: 1-800-772-1213 • Medicare: 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) • Your state Medicaid office or the nursing home social worker • For your own taxes: a tax professional Which of these three had you already heard about — 1, 2, 3, or none? Tell me in the comments. Your answer might help the person reading right after you. Please never post your Social Security number, Medicare number or bank details. Send this to a friend who stopped their tax withholding, a neighbor who sold a house last year, or anyone with a parent in a nursing home.
