Description

Is your money safe in the bank? On Friday, September 25, 2026, Nano Banc in California closed its doors. By Monday, another bank had taken over and customers still had their money. But not every dollar at your bank is protected. In this video I explain, in plain English, what really happens when a bank closes, how the FDIC $250,000 limit works (and how a married couple can protect $1 million at one bank), which money at your bank is NOT insured — annuities, investments, your safe deposit box and some money apps — what happens to your Social Security direct deposit, and how to spot the "move your money to keep it safe" scam call. ā±ļø CHAPTERS 0:00 Your bank's doors are locked — what now? 1:16 Before we start 1:27 What really happened when Nano Banc closed 3:41 The FDIC $250,000 limit explained (per person, per bank, per account type) 5:25 The money your bank can't protect 5:31 Dorothy's story: the "better than a CD" mistake (annuities) 7:11 Money apps that are not banks 7:44 What happens to your Social Security check if your bank closes 9:00 The scam call that takes seniors' life savings 9:46 Frank's story: how a bank teller saved his savings 10:48 Checklist — screenshot this 11:31 So, is your money safe in the bank? šŸ›”ļø WHAT IS PROTECTED (FDIC / NCUA) • $250,000 per person, per bank, per type of account • Joint account: $250,000 for each owner ($500,000 for a couple) • Retirement accounts at the bank, like an IRA: a separate $250,000 • Accounts that name beneficiaries: $250,000 per person named, up to 5 people • Credit unions: the same $250,000 limit through the NCUA • Since 1933, no one has lost a penny of FDIC-insured money āš ļø WHAT IS NOT PROTECTED BY THE BANK'S INSURANCE • Annuities (even if sold at your bank) • Stocks, bonds and mutual funds • Life insurance • Crypto, like Bitcoin • Safe deposit boxes and everything inside them • Money in apps that are not banks Look for the words "Not FDIC insured. Not a deposit. May lose value." on the paperwork. āœ… CHECKLIST 1. Check that your bank is FDIC insured — look for "Member FDIC" or use BankFind on fdic.gov. 2. Add up your money at each bank, by type of account. 3. Over $250,000? Spread it across banks, or check it with the free EDIE tool at fdic.gov. 4. Annuities, stocks and your safe deposit box are not insured by the bank. 5. Money apps are not always banks. Check where your money really sits. 6. Keep a small backup account at a second bank. 7. Never move money because someone called you. Hang up and call the number on the back of your card. šŸ“ž WHO TO CALL • FDIC: 1-877-ASK-FDIC (1-877-275-3342) • Social Security: 1-800-772-1213 (if your bank closes and no other bank takes over) • Your bank: only the number on the back of your card or your statement • Real banks and government agencies will NEVER ask you to move your money to keep it safe. šŸ’¬ Has your bank ever closed, or been taken over by another bank? Or has someone called you saying your account was in danger? Tell me in the comments — your story might help someone else. Please never post your bank details or Social Security number. šŸ“¤ Send this to a friend who keeps all their savings at one bank, or a parent who answers every phone call. šŸ”” Subscribe for plain-English updates on Social Security, Medicare and your money every week.
