Description
If your Social Security comes by direct deposit, here are 5 rules that protect your money — and a few that let money come out before you ever see it. If a debt collector gets a court order against your bank account, your bank has to protect up to two months of your Social Security, automatically. Here's how that works, the $750 limit on government debt collection (and the IRS exception), what to do if Social Security says you were overpaid, what happens now that paper checks have ended, and how to stop a scammer from stealing your deposit.

CHECKLIST
✅ Two months of direct-deposited Social Security is protected from most debt collectors.
✅ Keep Social Security in its own account, if you can.
✅ Most federal debts can't take your check below $750. IRS back taxes are different (up to 15%).
✅ Overpayment notice? Act within 30 days.
✅ Ask for an appeal (SSA-561), a waiver (SSA-632), or a smaller monthly payment.
✅ Still on paper checks? Switch to direct deposit or a Direct Express card.
✅ Create your own my Social Security account, even if you never use it.
✅ Ever scammed? Ask Social Security for a direct deposit fraud block.
