Description
Is your Social Security check correct? If you were born before 1964, your check is based on numbers most people never check โ and sometimes they're wrong. In this video I explain, in plain English, 5 mistakes that can leave you missing money every month for the rest of your life: never applying after the Social Security Fairness Act (WEP/GPO repeal) for retired teachers, police officers, firefighters and government workers; not asking about a check for your child (including a grown child disabled before 22); waiting too long for a spouse check; thinking money held back under the earnings limit is gone; and missing years on your Social Security earnings record.

โ
CHECKLIST
1. Government pension (teacher, police, firefighter, state/city or federal worker hired before 1984)? Your check should have gone up. Never applied because of your pension? Apply now โ back pay for first-time applicants usually only goes back 6 months.
2. Turned down years ago because of the old rules? Bring that letter.
3. Child under 18, 18 and still in high school, or a son or daughter disabled before 22? Ask: "Can my child get benefits on my record?" It doesn't reduce your own check.
4. Getting a spouse check? It stops growing at full retirement age โ don't wait past it.
5. Social Security held back checks because you worked? At full retirement age your check is recalculated and should go up. If it didn't, call.
6. Check your earnings record at ssa.gov (my Social Security). Missing years or zeros? Gather W-2s, pay stubs or tax returns and ask for a correction (form SSA-7008).
๐ KEY NUMBERS (2026)
โข Earnings limit before full retirement age: $24,480 ($1 held back for every $2 over)
โข Full retirement age: 67 if born in 1960 or later
โข Spouse check: up to half of your husband's or wife's full benefit
โข Child's benefit: up to half of the parent's full benefit
โข Earnings record corrections: normally within about 3 years, with exceptions
๐ WHO TO CALL
โข Social Security: 1-800-772-1213
โข Online: ssa.gov โ always type it in yourself, never click a link in a text or email
๐ฌ Which of these five surprised you the most? Tell me in the comments โ your answer might help someone else. Please never post your Social Security number.
๐ค Send this to a retired teacher or police officer, a parent caring for a grown child with a disability, or anyone still working while they collect.
