Description
Dōki no Sakura began as a girl's lament. In early 1938 Saijō Yaso published
the poem Nirin no Sakura (Two Cherry Blossoms) in the girls' magazine Shōjo
Club, in which a young woman speaks to her lover killed in the fighting at
Shanghai.
In July 1939 it came out on record as the soldiers' song Sen'yū no Uta, set to
music by Ōmura Nōshō. The record was no success.
At the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy on Etajima, the cadet Chōsa Hiroshi came
across it and rewrote it for the classmates of his own year, the "dōki". Two
verses about a naval air group were added later by an unknown author.
*English*
You and I are cherry blossoms of the same class
Blooming in the garden of the same Naval Academy
Blossoms that have bloomed must be ready to fall
So let us fall in glory for our country
You and I are cherry blossoms of the same class
Blooming in the garden of the same Naval Academy
We are not brothers - no blood binds the two of us
And yet somehow we are so close we cannot part
You and I are cherry blossoms of the same class
Blooming in the garden of the same air group
Out in the southern sky in the sunset glow we watched
The lead plane has still not come home
You and I are cherry blossoms of the same class
Blooming in the garden of the same air group
We swore it so solemnly - yet you did not wait for that day
Why did you die? Why did you fall?
You and I are cherry blossoms of the same class
Even if we fall far apart from each other
At Yasukuni Shrine in the capital of flowers
Let us bloom on its branches in spring and meet again
[EN] DISCLAIMER
This is a cover of Dōki no Sakura, a song sung by cadets and airmen of the
Imperial Japanese Navy between 1939 and 1945. The lyrics are the wording as it
was handed down; they are not mine. The song likens death in battle to falling
cherry blossoms and promises that the fallen will meet again at Yasukuni
Shrine. It is presented as a document of its time, and that view of death is
not shared here. The text names no enemy, no nation and no person, and the
video shows none. It is shared for its musical and historical interest.
