Description
Коробейники Korobeiniki » 簪ひとつ (Kanzashi Hitotsu) | Nightcore Version with Lyrics & Subtitles
Korobeiniki, also known as Korobushka, began as a poem sold by the people it describes. Nikolay Nekrasov wrote it in 1861. It circulated as red booklets at three kopecks, two of which went to the peddlers, until the censors banned the print in 1863.
Kanzashi Hitotsu (簪ひとつ, "Just One Hairpin") moves the story to Japan in the same year, 1861, with new Japanese lyrics. The ring becomes a kanzashi, a hairpin that popular accounts of Edo custom tie to a marriage proposal.

My pack is full to the brim
Chintz and gold brocade
Have a heart my dear
And spare this young shoulder
Have a heart my dear
And spare this young shoulder
Come out come out to the barley
I'll wait there until night
And once I see those bright clear eyes
I'll lay out all my wares
And once I see those bright clear eyes
I'll lay out all my wares
I paid good money for my stock
Don't haggle and don't be stingy
Bring those red lips close
And come to your sweetheart's side
Bring those red lips close
And come to your sweetheart's side
The night grows deep and the mist rises
The young man waits
Look there she comes - the one he waited for
And the merchant plies his trade
Look there she comes - the one he waited for
And the merchant plies his trade
Omiyo haggles with care
Afraid of paying too much
He kisses her
And asks her to sweeten the deal
He kisses her
And asks her to sweeten the deal
Only the deep of night knows
How the two came to terms
Stand up again tall barley
And keep the secret safe
Stand up again tall barley
And keep the secret safe
Light so light is my pack now
The strap no longer cuts in
And all my girl took
Was one hairpin
And all my girl took
Was one hairpin
I gave her a bolt of chintz
A red ribbon for her hair
A sash and a white head cloth
Tie them on for the barley harvest
A sash and a white head cloth
Tie them on for the barley harvest
My girl gave it all back
All but the hairpin
I won't go about dressed up
Unless my love is by my side
I won't go about dressed up
Unless my love is by my side
[EN] DISCLAIMER & HISTORICAL CONTEXT
This is a Japanese adaptation of the Russian folk song Korobeiniki, which sets the opening of Nikolay Nekrasov's poem of 1861 to music. The lyrics are new and follow the poem verse by verse. They move a travelling peddler and a village girl to Japan in the same year, 1861, and are written in the everyday speech of the late Edo period. Like the poem, the song only hints at what happens in the barley field and never spells it out. The video is made for artistic and cultural purposes and takes no political position.
