Description

This is my next cover of Battotai, this time with all six verses. This one has a completely different style and stays faithful to the original 1882 first edition :3 Battotai opens with an odd fact: its enemy is Japanese. The poem was written in 1882 by Toyama Masakazu for the first collection of new-style Japanese poetry, five years after the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877, when former samurai rose against the Meiji government. It honours the Battotai, the "Sword-Drawing Corps", a unit of swordsmen raised because conscripted soldiers could not match the rebels with the blade, and it takes its model from Tennyson's "The Charge of the Light Brigade". Charles Leroux, a French military bandmaster serving in Japan, set it to music, and it was first performed at the Rokumeikan in Tokyo on 9 November 1885. In 1886 the tune became part of the Imperial Army's parade march, and a march built on it is still played by Japan's Self-Defense Forces. [EN] DISCLAIMER This is a cover of Battotai, a poem written in 1882 by Toyama Masakazu and set to music in 1885 by Charles Leroux. It looks back on the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877, a civil war in which the Imperial Army fought former samurai of its own country, and its melody lives on in a parade march still played in Japan. The lyrics are the original wording and are presented as an artistic and historical document. Their language about rebels, loyalty and death expresses the view of one side in 1877 and is not endorsed here. No real person or people is targeted.
