Description

NOAA found washing machines, dryers, chest freezers and dishwashers, lying in the mud on the bottom of the ocean. #noaa #oceanexploration #gulfofmexico ⚠️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLFnG6D0zlY&list=PL0H5lrcTOMY83VEIt2hu1weXKq-HqHNKc&index=3&pp=iAQBsAgC 🌊 The sonar showed exactly what a sunken ship looks like from above. One large object on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico, nearly a mile down, with smaller pieces scattered all around it. In December two thousand and seventeen, NOAA sent a robot down to have a look at it. What the lights found was not a ship. It was washing machines, dryers, chest freezers and dishwashers, lying in the mud in a place sunlight has never reached, and a forty foot shipping container with one corner torn open. Five days earlier, the same ship had put the same robot down on a real wreck, a copper sheathed merchant vessel that sank sometime after eighteen thirty, with the stove still standing in the middle of it. So how does a container of second hand appliances end up nearly a mile down? How did the crew work out how long it had been sitting there, and why did the answer come from a phone call to somebody's mother? And why is the seabed treating a nineteenth century sailing ship and a load of scrap washing machines in exactly the same way? Let's find out. 🧭 Chapters 0:00 The sonar said shipwreck 0:39 The Expedition 3:20 Going a mile down 4:19 There was no ship 5:52 ITLU733016 7:34 Coral on a washing machine 9:20 How a container goes overboard 10:39 The one off California 11:25 We got there first 📖 Sources: NOAA Ocean Exploration — ROV Dive Summary, EX1711 Dive 12, 14 December 2017 — https://oer.hpc.msstate.edu/okeanos/ex1711/EX1711_DIVE12_20171214_ROVDiveSummary_Final.pdf NOAA Ocean Exploration — ROV Dive Summary, EX1711 Dive 07, 9 December 2017 — https://oer.hpc.msstate.edu/okeanos/ex1711/EX1711_DIVE07_20171209_ROVDiveSummary_Final.pdf NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research — Cruise Report EX-17-11, Gulf of Mexico 2017
