Description

December 12th, 1976. Elvis Presley walked off the stage of the Las Vegas Hilton for what nobody knew would be the last time he ever played Las Vegas. That same night was Frank Sinatra's 61st birthday — and a hand-delivered invitation was waiting in Elvis's suite. At three in the morning, in a private room at Caesars Palace full of Frank's closest friends, Sinatra held out the microphone across the piano. "You sing everybody's songs, kid. Let's hear you sing mine." The room laughed. Elvis didn't. Five months earlier, his father had fired Red West — the man who had stood between Elvis and the rest of the world since a high school bathroom in Memphis. Elvis wasn't in the room when it happened. He never called. Halfway through My Way, on the line about regrets, his voice broke in front of eighty people. Frank Sinatra stood frozen with his hand still out. What Frank admitted next about the song that made him a legend, the one word Elvis wrote in pencil on a piece of sheet music, and the phone that rang in Memphis at dawn — that's the part of this story almost nobody has heard.
