Description

October 3, 1945. The Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show in Tupelo. Nine children had already sung on the outdoor stage when the man from WELO radio called a name nobody recognized: Elvis Presley. A ten-year-old boy in faded overalls walked out with no piano player, no guitar and no sheet music. The microphone was a foot above his head. The crowd laughed. One judge wrote down a pity score before he sang a note. Then an old stagehand set a wooden chair in front of the microphone, and the boy climbed up and sang "Old Shep." What happened next is a story about a teacher who was carrying a secret about the Presley family, a mother who had kept her head down for seven years, a scoreboard that made no sense to anyone in the crowd, and a promise that was kept on that same fairground eleven years later. #ElvisPresley #Tupelo #OldShep #YoungElvis #GladysPresley #ElvisChildhood #Mississippi #1945 #TalentShow #KingOfRockAndRoll
