Description

November 1969. Mahalia Jackson, the Queen of Gospel, sat down with Johnny Carson for a rare television appearance, and for fifteen minutes it was exactly the warm, funny segment everyone expected. Then the curtain opened on a surprise guest. Elvis Presley walked out, shook Johnny's hand, and moved to take the seat beside her. Mahalia stood up, walked to the other side of Johnny's desk, and sat down in the empty armchair. "It's my faith," she said softly. "And everybody in this country knows what that young man's music does to people." For years, preachers had called Elvis the devil's own singer. Churches had burned his records in parking lots. Everyone in that studio waited for him to walk off. Instead, he asked one question: "Which songs?" What followed was nothing like the clash the producers expected. It was an honest conversation between two people who had both been judged by people who had only heard about them — about a two-room house in Tupelo, a Black church on East Trigg Avenue, the only Grammy Elvis had ever won, a minister in Chicago who once stopped Mahalia in the middle of a song, and the night the King of Rock and Roll and the Queen of Gospel sang a hymn together on live television. #ElvisPresley #MahaliaJackson #JohnnyCarson #TheTonightShow #KingOfRockAndRoll #QueenOfGospel #HowGreatThouArt #Graceland #GospelMusic #AmazingGrace #ColonelParker #RockHistory #MusicLegends
