Description

August 1974. Two-thirty in the morning, downtown Las Vegas — not the Strip, but old Fremont Street, where the casinos were older and nobody went to see stars. In a smoky little lounge at the back of one of those casinos, Lorraine Dupree — a preacher's daughter from Louisiana they called the Voice of Fremont Street — had won the Thursday night song battle seventy weeks in a row. Seventy straight. And to prove nobody was handing her easy wins, she picked every challenger herself, at random, out of the crowd. That night, she pointed at a heavy-set man in the back corner. A scraggly beard, a crushed fedora, big tinted glasses, a tweed jacket that didn't fit, and a glass of water in front of him. The room laughed. When she asked his name, he said, "Aron." Nobody reacted. When he told the piano player he wanted to sing an old spiritual, the room started to boo. Nobody in that lounge — not even the woman who picked him — knew they were booing Elvis Presley. What he sang, what he did when the applause meter swung his way, and what he told her in the alley behind the casino at three in the morning, stayed a secret for three years.
