Description

March 1974. Thunderstorms grounded Elvis Presley's chartered plane somewhere on the Gulf Coast, so he did something he hadn't done in years: he got behind the wheel and drove. Riding in his back seat were the three women who sang behind him every night — the Sweet Inspirations — and for two hours they sang gospel songs all the way across Alabama. Then they got hungry. And on a back road outside a little town, they found a cinderblock diner with a faded hand-painted sign still taped in the front window, ten years after it became illegal: WHITES ONLY. "Keep driving, baby. We'll eat later." He didn't keep driving. Inside was a man who had Elvis Presley's picture on his wall and Elvis Presley's records in his jukebox — and who told the three finest singers Elvis had ever worked with that they could wait in the car. What Elvis said to him over the next fifteen minutes, without raising his voice once, left the whole room in tears. And when that man died more than twenty years later, his family found out he'd been keeping a secret about that day the entire time.
