Description

At ten past seven on a Saturday night, a drifter walked in. Torn Army jacket, filthy knit cap, three days of beard, boots coming apart, smelling of motor oil. He paid two hundred dollars cash in advance for a porterhouse. The manager took the money — and sat him at the table by the kitchen doors where they sent people they wanted gone. Then, in the kitchen, the manager told the cook to use the steak that had been sent back the night before. "Who's gonna believe a bum?" A young Black waitress heard every word. She had a nine-year-old son, a mother going blind, and everything to lose. She walked into the walk-in cooler, wrote eight words on a guest check, and pressed it into the drifter's hand with his plate. She had no idea she was handing it to Elvis Presley. Or that he'd come back to that restaurant because of something that happened on its sidewalk in 1951 — to his mother.
