Description

One of the darkest moments in Formula 1 history unfolded at the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix when Roger Williamson crashed heavily, flipped upside down and became trapped inside his burning car. Williamson had survived the initial impact and was still conscious. But with the car upside down and flames quickly surrounding him, he was unable to escape on his own. Then fellow driver David Purley, one of Williamson’s friends, came across the accident. While the rest of the field continued racing, Purley stopped his own car, abandoned his race and ran directly toward the burning wreck. With no concern for his own safety, he desperately tried to flip Williamson’s car back over with his bare hands. It wouldn’t move. Purley then grabbed a fire extinguisher and emptied it into the flames, but it wasn’t enough to bring the growing fire under control. He desperately tried to get help, even attempting to signal the other drivers as they continued racing past the accident. But Purley couldn’t rescue his friend alone. Williamson remained trapped inside the burning car, and Purley could hear him calling for help. Eventually, there was silence. Roger Williamson died at just 25 years old, while Purley’s desperate attempt to save him became one of the most heartbreaking acts of bravery in Formula 1 history. 💔🏎️
