Tonight, when you change the sheets, strip the bed all the way down to the bare mattress and turn on the big light. There it is. The wide yellow shadow in the shape of a person, the one you have been flipping the mattress to hide for ten years. It was never your housekeeping, mija. You cannot wash a thing that does not fit in a machine, and nobody ever handed you the way. That shadow comes out, most of it, in about ten minutes, with a brown bottle that costs a dollar twenty nine. And the forbidden part: the twenty two dollar mattress and upholstery stain spray in the cleaning aisle is the same liquid.
WHAT THE SHADOW IS: a body gives off close to a pint of sweat a night. The water dries, the skin oil stays, and old oil turns yellow, the same way the oil at the back of your pantry does. A thing that turned yellow by meeting the air can be turned back with more air. With oxygen.
WHY NOT THE CARPET POWDER: the oxygen powder leaves washing soda behind, which is fine on a carpet because you rinse it. You cannot rinse a mattress. Whatever goes in stays in, right under your face. So the mattress gets the same oxygen in the one form that leaves nothing: hydrogen peroxide, 3 percent, which falls apart into water and air. And that is why the box of baking soda never goes on my bed either.
THE METHOD:
1. Vacuum slow with the upholstery tool, every seam, the dry dirt comes out dry
2. TEST a coin-sized spot at the foot if the cover is colored or printed, ten minutes
3. THE BOTTLE MUST BE ALIVE. Pour a little down the sink drain. Fizz means alive. Flat means it is water. Date the bottle in marker when you open it
4. One drop of dish soap in the brown bottle, screw a sprayer onto it (the threads match)
5. MIST the whole shadow edge to edge, damp like a shirt you are ironing, never wet. A mist, never a pour, the opposite of the carpet
6. TEN MINUTES. Watch it fizz thickest where the shadow is darkest. Do not scrub. Re-mist any edge that dries
7. Press clean white towels flat with your whole weight and lift. Press, never rub. No rinse
8. Fan across the bare bed, window open, two or three hours. El colchón al sol if the day is bright
BLOOD: cold water always, hot water cooks it in. Cold damp cloth, peroxide on the spot, blot the pink foam, repeat until it foams white.
HONEST WORDS: urine is a salt in the foam and no oxygen eats a salt, that one is the enzyme cleaner. Memory foam and pillow tops get an even lighter mist and a longer fan. Never peroxide mixed with vinegar, bleach or anything but the one drop of soap. A mattress that sags or smells from deep inside is finished. This is a twice a year job, and the real fix is a zippered protector that goes in the wash.
WHO PROFITS: the $22 oxy mattress spray is hydrogen peroxide, a little soap and water. The brown bottle is $1.29 on the bottom shelf of the pharmacy. The $30 mattress deodorizing powder is baking soda and perfume. Read the back of the bottle. The front is for selling, and the back is for telling the truth.
Tonight: strip the bed and look, then pour a little of your brown bottle down the sink. Tell me in the comments one word, fizz or flat, and your county and how old that mattress is. I read every one.
