Description
At 104, you go to a lot of funerals. That isn't a complaint, it's arithmetic. And after enough of them, you start noticing something I could never have noticed at 60. You start being able to tell. In this video I share the 5 quiet signs I've watched appear in people somewhere in the last year of a life. Nobody teaches you these. The doctors don't mention them, mostly because the doctors aren't in the living room on a Tuesday afternoon watching how somebody handles their coffee cup. And the family doesn't see them either, because the family is too close and too frightened and would rather explain it away. He's just tired. She's just slowing down. It's the weather.
I talk about the earliest sign of all, the one almost no family catches, where a person quietly stops speaking in the future tense and starts saying you instead of we. I talk about why food stops mattering and why fighting that battle is the wrong instinct. I talk about the giving away of objects and the sudden telling of stories they've carried privately for sixty years, and why that is treasure most families waste by changing the subject. I talk about the turning toward people who are already gone, and why arguing with them about it is the cruelest thing you can do. And I talk about the settling, the peace that arrives near the end, and how to tell it apart from its evil twin, which is a person in pain who needs help today. I also share the one extra sign I couldn't leave out, the good day that comes near the very end, and exactly what to do if it arrives. I want to say clearly, this is not a diagnosis and I am not a doctor. Some of what I describe has other causes entirely and many of them are fixable. If you see these things in someone you love, the answer is not to sit in your kitchen grieving a person who is still alive.
The answer is to call their doctor, and then go and sit with them. That is the whole point of this video. To get you in the room while there is still somebody in it. Because there are four things people need to say to each other before the end, and I have never met a person who said all four and regretted it.
