Description

August 1971. The Las Vegas Hilton, just after the midnight show. Evel Knievel — the most famous man in America who got paid to crash — had just watched Elvis Presley perform for ninety minutes. His verdict, loud enough for the next table to hear: "Best-dressed man I ever saw who never got hurt." Barely an hour later, two hundred people had followed them out into the Nevada desert at two in the morning and parked along both sides of an empty road with their headlights on. Knievel on his racing Harley in stars-and-stripes leathers. Elvis on a seven-hundred-pound borrowed police motorcycle — still in the white jumpsuit and the cape, because "the costume finishes the race." Three races. One stalled engine. One very long wheelie. One sand drift. And a finish nobody on that road ever forgot. But the real story happened afterward, on the tailgate of a pickup truck at sunrise — and it ends, years later, with a battered white helmet and five words engraved on the inside that Evel Knievel never let anyone read while he was alive.
