Description
I was married to the same man for 68 years, and I'm going to tell you something nobody says out loud. There were long stretches in the middle of those 68 years where it did not feel like love at all. Where I looked across the kitchen at Robert reading his paper and felt nothing a movie would call romance. For years I thought something was wrong with us. I was wrong. Nothing was wrong with us.
Something was wrong with what I had been taught to expect. In this video I share 8 signs your marriage is actually working, even when it feels flat, tired, gray, or boring. I've watched hundreds of marriages over a century. The loud ones and the quiet ones. Couples who looked perfect at church on Sunday and came apart in eighteen months, and couples who bickered for fifty years and held hands at the end. The ones that lasted were almost never the ones that looked good.
I talk about why boredom is not a warning sign but a sign of safety, why the couples who never fight worried me more than the ones who did, the one small daily habit that predicts a marriage better than anything a counselor ever asks about, why fifty-fifty is a lie and no long marriage has ever been equal, and the hardest truth of all, that love in a long marriage is a tide that goes out and comes back more than once, and most people leave at low tide thinking the ocean is gone. I also give you the single test for telling the difference between a marriage that needs more of you and a marriage you should actually walk away from, because people mix those two up constantly. And I want to be clear about something.
This video is about ordinary hard marriages. Tired marriages. Boring marriages. It is not about cruelty. If you are afraid of the person you married, none of this applies to you, and I say so plainly in the video. If you are sitting in a quiet house tonight wondering whether what you have has gone dull or gone dead, count the eight. You may find you are not failing at all. You may find you are in the good part and just don't recognize it yet, the same way I didn't in 1971.
