Lake Mead just fell to its lowest level on record — and the ground coming out of the water sits exactly where old maps drew a kingdom nobody admits existed.
For roughly a hundred years, the best cartographers in Europe drew a named kingdom across what is now Arizona and Nevada: Tontonteac. It had borders. It had a capital. It had seven cities — Septem Citta — and a river. Writers who had no interest in America mentioned it in passing. A 1664 Latin geography textbook listed its river alongside the Indus, the Euphrates and the Rhine. And then, somewhere between 1580 and 1650, the maps changed, the kingdom vanished from the paper, and we were taught it was never there.
This episode follows the paper trail: the Seven Cities of Cibola and the expeditions sent to find them, the mentions that survive in books nobody thought to check, the Latin line beside the capital reading "Abacus, capital city, taken — now Granata," and the 1925 newspaper front page that announced a ruined city in Nevada. Plus the theory an independent researcher builds from all of it — presented as theirs, not mine.
Then the part that isn't history at all: the reservoir is emptying, the town of St. Thomas is standing on dry ground after decades under sixty feet of water, and most of the site still lies under what's left of the lake.
I'm not telling you what happened here. I'm telling you what was drawn — and when they stopped drawing it.
SOURCES & METHOD
Built from digitized 16th–17th century maps, period texts, expedition records, and contemporary newspaper archives. Speculative interpretations are attributed on screen to the researchers who make them. Where the official explanation is strong, it gets stated in full before it gets questioned.
DISCLOSURE
Some historical scenes are AI-assisted reconstructions, clearly created for illustration. No reconstruction is presented as an authentic photograph or artifact.
Every map in this video is digitized and public. Go look at them yourself — and if you read old Latin better than I do, the comment section on this channel works as a research desk. Viewers have corrected my dates and handed me better sources before.
