Description

The Complete Life of Balbhadra Kunwar | The Hero of Nalapani | Gyankunda A small fort. About seven hundred people inside, soldiers, women, and children. Outside, thousands of trained troops from one of the largest empires in the world. And yet that fort did not fall for a month, and the enemy itself later carved his name into stone as a tribute. This is the story of Balbhadra Kunwar, one of Nepal's most celebrated warriors, from his birth in a family of soldiers to his final stand thousands of kilometers from home. Grandson of the legendary western-campaign commander Amar Singh Thapa, Balbhadra rose to high command in the Nepali army while still young. In 1814, during the Anglo-Nepalese War, he led the defense of the fort of Nalapani (Khalanga) near Dehradun, a month-long siege that claimed the life of the British commander General Rollo Gillespie, and ended only when the British cut off the fort's water supply and Balbhadra chose to break out and save his remaining men rather than surrender. After the war, Balbhadra left Nepal for Lahore and joined the army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He was killed in 1823 at Nowshera, near Peshawar, fighting the Afghans. To this day, a British-built memorial still stands at Khalanga, Dehradun, inscribed with words that honor him directly: "This is inscribed as a tribute of respect for our gallant adversary Bulbudder, Commander of the fort, and his brave Goorkhas, who were afterwards, while in the service of Runjeet Sing, shot down in their ranks to the last man by Afghan artillery." It remains one of the only monuments in military history built by a victorious army to honor the man who fought against them. This biography covers his full life, birth and family, the siege of Nalapani, his years in Punjab, his death at Nowshera, and the legacy that followed, including the origins of Gurkha service in foreign armies मुख्य स्रोतहरू / KEY SOURCES (for verification) • Wikipedia — Balbhadra Kunwar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balbhadra_Kunwar • Wikipedia — Battle of Nalapani: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Nalapani • Wikipedia — Khalanga War Memorial: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khalanga_War_Memorial • Wikipedia — Kunwar family: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunwar_family • National Monuments Authority of India: https://www.nma.gov.in/showfile.php?lang=1&level=2&lid=1416&ls_id=1155&nma_type=0 • CESLAM — Origins of Identity: https://www.ceslam.org/news/2208 • Shilapatra: https://shilapatra.com/detail/15093 • Wikiquote — Balbhadra Kunwar: https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Balbhadra_Kunwar Disclaimer: This video is a narrative/documentary-style historical biography based on available historical sources and records.
