In this video, I walk through how my wife and I built travel into our retirement plan. Rather than starting with an arbitrary dollar amount, we first thought about the experiences we wanted, how frequently we hoped to travel, and how those plans might change as we move through the Go-Go, Mid-Go, Slow-Go, and No-Go years of retirement.
I also explain why we intentionally front-loaded more of our travel spending into our healthiest and most active years, what expenses we include in our travel budget, and how flexible spending guardrails allow us to adjust when market conditions change.
Our goal isn't to spend as much as possible. It's to give ourselves permission to enjoy the experiences we planned for—without putting our long-term retirement plan at unnecessary risk.
How are you budgeting for travel in retirement: annually, trip by trip, or through a sinking fund? Share your approach in the comments.
