Description

Every city ruining itself right now, explained in minutes. Some are sprawling into deserts with no water plan, some overbuilt so aggressively that entire towers sit empty, and one still can't keep its downtown alive after betting everything on a single industry. As a real urban planner, i'm breaking down the cities that are actively making themselves worse and what's going wrong in real time... #urbanplanning #citydesign #explained Orlando: 75 million tourists a year and not a single walkable neighborhood for the people who actually live there. The city didn't grow around residents, it grew around a theme park.. Austin: Overbuilt luxury apartments sitting empty while the musicians and creatives who made the city famous got priced out of their own neighborhoods. Dubai: Tallest building on earth, 12 lane highways, ski slopes in the desert, and 50°C summers where walking outside is physically dangerous.. Charlotte: Added 200,000 people in a decade with one light rail line and a whole lot of highways. The infrastructure debt is piling up quietly. Nashville: Approved a billion dollar stadium while residents begged for basic sidewalks. Housing costs jumped over 40% and the transit plan got voted down.. San Francisco: Office vacancy hit 37% and downtown looks abandoned. The city bet everything on tech and had no backup plan when companies went remote. Phoenix: Keeps building subdivisions in 115°F heat while the Colorado River keeps shrinking. The light rail covers 28 miles in a 14,000 square mile metro... Houston: $125 billion in hurricane damage and the city responded by continuing to build on flood prone land. 30% of wetlands paved over since the 1990s. Atlanta: 29 counties, 3 on the transit system. Billions spent widening highways that fill up immediately. Induced demand is not a theory here, its documented fact. Las Vegas: 90% of its water comes from a river that's shrinking fast. The conservation work is impressive but you can't outpace growth with savings forever... Which city's planning failures hit closest to home for you? Drop it in the comments.. I'm Umut, an urban planner currently pursuing my Master's degree. I'm passionate about decoding the complex world of cities, and I'm here to break down everything I've learned—from university lectures to my travels—into clear videos. My goal is to make the often technical subject of urban planning engaging and easy to understand for everyone. On this channel, we explain various topics like city models, principles of urbanism, some insanely-well designed cities, and American suburbs in a simple and clear way. Of course, topics like Megacity projects, future city models, street patterns, smart cities, walkability, urban design, zoning, public transportation and urban planners are also in our area of interest. If you want to better understand your environment, join a conscious conversation about cities, and explore these living organisms with me, you're in the right place.
