Dolly Parton Told the TRUTH About Elvis Presley on TV—Elvis Walked On Stage Did The Unexpected

November 1976. A small late-night talk show taping in Nashville, eighty people on folding bleachers. Dolly Parton — thirty years old, leaving Porter Wagoner behind, accused of "going Hollywood" — was asked if she was going to end up just like Elvis. "Well, honey, I sure hope not." She said she loved him. She said he had the best voice God ever put in a man. And then she said what nobody in Nashville would say out loud: that they'd built a machine around him, and somewhere inside the jumpsuits and the capes and the jewels, the boy from Tupelo was hiding. Two floors above the studio, Elvis Presley was watching on a monitor. Fifteen minutes later, he walked out from behind the curtain. What followed was a confrontation, a confession about a song — and the truth about a phone call from Colonel Tom Parker in 1974 that Elvis had never been told. By the end of the night, there was a borrowed guitar, a wooden stool, a promise made in a back hallway, and a reel of videotape with five words written across the box: Do not air. Destroy. Parker.
