Description
Inside the 16th-century Veerabhadra Temple at Lepakshi, Andhra Pradesh, stands one of India’s most famous architectural wonders: the hanging pillar.
Among the temple's dozens of intricately carved stone columns, this pillar does not fully touch the floor slab below it, allowing thin objects to be passed underneath.
Rather than a supernatural mystery, engineers and historians point to sophisticated Vijayanagara-era weight distribution, cantilever principles, and precise stone interlocking.
It remains a stunning testament to the advanced architectural skill of ancient India.
