Description
A wild 16-kilometer mountain road, an ascent of nearly 800 meters, and an unforgettable encounter with Mount Yala. This immersive drive begins at Muya Monastery near Tagong in western Sichuan, China, and follows a rugged highland track toward the Yunrao Yala viewpoint.
The journey is as compelling as the destination. Unpaved surfaces, gravel, bends and rolling ridgelines shape the climb through open mountain pasture. Under mostly cloudy skies with sunny intervals, shifting light adds depth to the grasslands and surrounding slopes. As the road rises, the monastery and lower pastures give way to a more exposed mountain landscape and the anticipation of Yala’s snow-covered heights.
Tagong is a highland town in Kangding, Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan. Its grasslands, Tibetan villages, monasteries and sacred mountain backdrop make it a distinctive stop on a western Sichuan road trip. These landscapes are also living pastoral country, where grazing, local travel and religious traditions remain closely connected.
Muya Monastery, near Gerima Village, is the cultural starting point of this journey. The complex includes monastic buildings, a nunnery and Buddhist learning institutions. Golden roofs, white stupas, residential buildings, prayer flags and inscribed mani stones reveal the spiritual character of the area. Muya Monastery is separate from Tagong Monastery in the town itself; this drive leaves Muya and heads into the higher mountain pastures.
Mount Yala, also known as Yala Snow Mountain, rises to approximately 5,820 meters near the meeting point of Kangding, Daofu and Danba. Its Tibetan name is commonly rendered as “Eastern White Yak Mountain.” Snow, glaciers and steep rock faces contrast with the grasslands below, creating one of western Sichuan’s most recognizable sacred mountain landscapes.
Yunrao Yala offers a remarkably close perspective on the mountain’s form and glacial features. The driving elevations recorded here range from 3,863 to 4,638 meters: a difference of 775 meters, rounded to 800 meters in the title. The upper viewing platform is commonly described as approximately 4,700 meters above sea level, with the vehicle arrival area and walking viewpoint at different heights.
Filmed in high-quality 4K with no narration and no background music, preserving the authentic sounds of the vehicle, tires and surrounding landscape. Experience the rough surface, changing mountain views and atmosphere of this September ascent at the pace of the real journey.
