Description
Follow the Yarlung Tsangpo into Tibet’s Dagu Gorge, where snow-capped peaks, towering cliffs and a giant dam share the landscape. This immersive 4K drive begins at Road Tunnel No. 3 beside Zangmu Hydropower Station in Gyaca County. We follow Provincial Road S508 upstream through the gorge and the Dagu hydropower area, finishing near Zangga Village in Sangri County.
Dagu lies within the Sangri–Gyaca gorge corridor on the middle Yarlung Tsangpo in Shannan, Tibet, China. Uplift and river erosion have shaped a deeply cut valley, with steep slopes pressing close to the winding road. Broad reservoir waters contrast with narrower passages between rock walls, while snowy heights, exposed mountainsides and greener tributary valleys reveal the plateau’s varied scenery. This middle-river landscape is distinct from the famous Great Bend canyon farther downstream toward Nyingchi and Medog.
The gorge also forms an important hydropower corridor. Near our starting point, Zangmu has a capacity of 510 MW and a maximum dam height of 116 metres. Fully commissioned in 2015, it was the first large hydropower station on the river’s main stem. Farther upstream, Dagu has a capacity of 660 MW and a 117-metre dam; all its units entered service in 2021. Its high-altitude roller-compacted concrete gravity dam is a major engineering landmark along this drive. A fish passage roughly 3.4 kilometres long overcomes about 80 metres of elevation difference to help fish migrate around the barrier.
The wider cascade also includes Jiexu, under construction, and the planned Bayu project farther upstream. Near Zangmu Reservoir, the Lhasa–Nyingchi Railway crosses the river on the Zangmu arch bridge, with a 430-metre main span. Roads, railway structures and dams reveal the challenges of building transport and energy infrastructure inside these steep highland valleys.
Local culture adds another dimension. Dagu is known for stone cooking pots and fish dishes prepared in them, with stone-pot craftsmanship associated with the Jiexu area. Local legends connect distinctive rock formations with Padmasambhava. Macaques inhabit the surrounding gorge landscape, and streams and vegetation enrich its side valleys. Near the end, Zangga Village belongs to Baidui Township and participates in Sangri’s high-altitude grape-growing economy.
No narration and no music—just authentic driving and ambient sounds. Enjoy the changing scale of snowy mountains, river water, rock walls and monumental engineering from the road.
