Description

A mountain descent that feels almost like free fall. Starting at Demu La Pass, 4,653 metres above sea level, this 4K drive follows a rough, winding road down the southern side of the Milu Route in Nyingchi, Tibet, China. Steep downhill sections, tight bends and exposed mountainsides make the changing depth of the valley part of the experience. We descend through the Demu South Valley to Gasa Village in Mirui Township. The 18-kilometre journey takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, with recorded elevation falling from 4,653 to 3,177 metres—a net drop of 1,476 metres. Much of the road is unpaved, with loose gravel and uneven surfaces. Some cliffside sections have no guardrails, while the approach towards Mirui transitions to concrete. Connecting Lulang and Mirui across the Sejila mountain region, the Milu Route reveals the dramatic vertical landscapes of southeastern Tibet. High mountain meadows and shrubs give way to forested slopes, with villages and broader valley landscapes farther below. As the road loses height, every bend changes the relationship between the mountainside, the distant slopes and the valley floor. This crossing also belongs to a historic Tea Horse Road corridor. Long before modern highways, caravans, traders and pilgrims travelled between the two sides of the mountains. The former Demu Monastery site on the Lulang side and Demu Monastery on the Mirui side provide a religious and historical context for the journey. The drive follows a landscape shaped by centuries of movement between mountain communities. Gasa has a stone-pot-making heritage associated with Lulang’s stone-pot chicken. This local connection adds a human dimension to the destination: the route links mountain scenery with village life, regional food and craft traditions. The transition from rough mountain tracks to concrete village roads also reflects the changing infrastructure of the area. This video records conditions on the filming day; maintenance, weather and temporary restrictions can alter access and road surfaces. Enjoy the journey in 4K with original driving and environmental sounds, without narration or background music. An immersive drive for viewers interested in Tibet road trips, rugged mountain roads, off-road scenery and travel from the driving perspective. 🧭 Route Information 📍 Location: Bayi District, Nyingchi, Tibet, China 🚩 Start: Demu La Pass 🏁 End: Gasa Village, Mirui Township 📏 Distance: 18 km ⏱️ Driving time: 1 hour 15 minutes 🏔️ Recorded elevation: 4,653 m → 3,177 m 📅 Filming date: October 14 ☀️ Weather: Mostly sunny 🎬 Picture and sound: 4K | Original driving and ambient sounds | No narration or background music Which part of the descent made you feel the height most strongly?
