Description
A glacier-capped mountain stands across the road—and China’s G219 heads straight into it. This high-quality 4K drive approaches Bukongla Mountain Tunnel at the boundary between Zayu and Medog in southeastern Tibet, where a winding mountain road becomes a passage through the rock beneath the snowy heights.
Starting near Botong, in the Buzong Village area of Shangzayü Town, we climb from the Zayu side, pass through Bukongla Mountain Tunnel and continue toward Namu Longba on the Medog side. The 20.5 km journey stays within the mountain section around the tunnel, at recorded elevations of 3,120–3,500 m.
Bukongla belongs to the Kangri Garpo mountain range, locally also called Gongri Gabu in Zayu. Moist monsoon air feeds this region’s snow and glaciers, while steep slopes and deeply cut valleys shape the landscape below. This is the wetter, densely dissected edge of the Tibetan Plateau, where glacier-covered heights and mountain forests form a striking setting for a road journey.
The tunnel is a key link on the Zayu–Medog section of G219. Instead of taking vehicles over the high pass, it carries the road through the mountain. Building and maintaining a route here means dealing with steep terrain, snow, water and unstable slopes. The experience is a drive into a glacier-capped mountain through a road tunnel excavated in rock at the glacier’s foot.
The wider Medog region has a long history of difficult access, with supplies once carried along mountain trails by porters and pack animals. The opening of the separate Zhamo road from Bomi in 2013 marked a major change; this video follows the connection from the Zayu side. Medog is also home to Monpa, Lhoba and Tibetan communities. These transport links matter for everyday journeys, deliveries, education and healthcare as well as tourism.
This episode concentrates on Bukongla’s mountain approaches and tunnel crossing. It ends near Namu Longba, before the onward journey into Medog’s lower valleys. If you enjoy Tibet road trips, Chinese infrastructure, glaciers and immersive mountain drives, this is a close look at how a road finds its way through a formidable natural barrier.
The video records the conditions encountered on the filming day. Construction and weather can affect access; consult current local notices before traveling.
