Description
Just 200 metres once made drivers hold their breath. This 4K drive explores Daliusha on China’s G219, following both the original cliffside road and the new cross-river bypass through the Nujiang Gorge. The old alignment beneath the loose rock slope and the bridges carrying traffic around it reveal two very different ways of travelling through the same extraordinary landscape.
Daliusha lies near Chawalong in Zayu County, Nyingchi, Xizang (Tibet). A vast grey-white scree slope spreads down the mountainside towards the Nujiang River, resembling a waterfall made of shattered stone. Despite its name, this is not desert quicksand: weathered rock breaks apart and accumulates on the slope, where rockfalls and small collapses remain part of the landscape.
The original road passed directly beneath this unstable hillside. Its notorious core danger section, roughly 200–300 metres long, became known among travellers as the “200 metres of life and death.” Driving both alignments offers a close comparison between the old riverside passage and the newer infrastructure built to avoid the main rockfall slope.
This is the hot, dry Nujiang valley, a striking contrast to the forested landscapes often associated with southeastern Tibet. Even on this overcast, rainy filming day, sparse vegetation, exposed rock and pale scree define the gorge. The river, steep mountainsides and changing road alignments create a powerful sense of scale throughout this short drive.
The name Bingchacha combines Bingzhongluo, Chawalong and Chayu, the three places linked by this celebrated Yunnan–Tibet road journey. Nearby Chawalong is an important supply and route junction, with onward connections towards places such as Jiaying Village. The broader area also has a long tradition of mountain travel and trade; road improvements continue to reshape access for residents, deliveries and visiting drivers.
The bridge bypass reduces direct exposure beneath the main rockfall slope, but the surrounding gorge remains a mountain environment. This recording documents conditions on the filming date, not live road conditions or permission to enter the old road. Follow local traffic controls and signs when travelling.
Enjoy immersive 4K driving with natural location sound, no narration and no music. Which interests you most: the original road beside the scree slope, or the engineering that created a new crossing?
