China's Breathtaking Border Highway — Driving G219 in Xizang (Tibet) | 4K

Follow the Yarlung Tsangpo into a lesser-seen side of southern Tibet, where a quiet road unfolds through a vast mountain valley. This high-quality 4K drive follows China’s G219 from Wolong Town in Mainling, Nyingchi, toward Nang County, ending at the roadside parking area beside the turnoff for Bobolang Glacier. Filmed on a sunny October day, the 63.8 km journey stays in the river corridor without crossing a mountain pass. Smooth asphalt, light traffic and recorded elevations of 2,981–3,093 metres give the drive a steady, unhurried rhythm. One distinctly sandy mountainside adds a memorable change of texture to the scenery. As the road bends, the river, slopes and valley open up from different angles. The Yarlung Tsangpo runs along the northern side of the Himalayas. Heading from Mainling toward Nang, the regional climate shifts from relatively moist to semi-arid conditions, revealing a different side of Nyingchi beyond its familiar forest scenery. Drier slopes, riverside vegetation and valley settlements form a landscape shaped by the relationship between water, terrain and local life. Our overall direction is upstream. There is more to this corridor than its road views. Between Jiage and Rixu villages, the Wolong rock formations are known for their unusual shapes along the riverbank, sculpted by flowing water over time. Scattered groves of giant Tibetan cypress are another distinctive feature of parts of the valley. Nearby, the Lieshan burial site in Jindong Township preserves traces of the Tibetan Empire. These places provide context for the surrounding area; this video is a driving journey, rather than a tour inside each attraction. Wolong is also a local service and supply stop along G219. Modern transport has added another layer to the valley: the Lhasa–Nyingchi railway’s approximately 13.59 km Gongduoding Tunnel lies within Wolong Town. Roads support daily travel, deliveries and scenic journeys, while the railway connects this mountain corridor with more distant towns and cities. The final turnoff leads toward the mountain valley containing Bobolang Glacier and Rabbit Lake. Access to that side road was prohibited because of a landslide at the time of filming. This drive ends at the parking area on G219; it does not enter the glacier area or show the glacier ice or lake.
