These are puffball mushrooms, known in Dutch as “parelstuifzwammen,” releasing their spores with a little help from the rain.
Unlike many mushrooms that release spores from gills underneath their caps, puffballs keep their spores inside a rounded fruiting body. As the mushroom matures, the inside becomes filled with millions of tiny, dry spores.
At the top of a mature puffball is a small opening. When a raindrop hits the mushroom, the impact briefly compresses it and pushes some of those spores out through that opening.
That is what creates the little smoke-like “puff” you can see in this video.
The cloud is not smoke or dust... it is made of microscopic fungal spores. Once they are released, wind and moving air can carry them away from the parent mushroom.
This helps the fungus spread to new places. If a spore lands somewhere with the right moisture, temperature, and nutrients, it may eventually grow into new fungal mycelium underground.
This video is shared for educational purposes to explain how puffball mushrooms reproduce and spread their spores.
